Monday, June 15, 2009 =96 In search of the Wild Banana by Marian Munro.

Tired of mowing your lawn? Curious about those juicy red berries? Want =20=

to add variety to your late summer menu?

Wild Bananas, Water-cress, cranberries, saskatoonberries and a host of =20=

salad greens may be found not far from your front door. Many of our =20
native wild plants and plant immigrants are actually edible. Some =20
sport fanciful names such as cat-tails and ostrich ferns, crows-feet =20
and checkerberry. Others are even sold in grocery stores. All are =20
yours to gather if you know where to look, what to eat and of course, =20=

what NOT to eat! (along with which species of plants are protected and =20=

where).

Of 1600 or more different plants growing wild in the Maritimes, 10 per =20=

cent or more may be used in soups, salads, desserts and beverages.
One doesn't have to travel far this week to collect some wild =20
food...right here in Halifax, the air is scented with the Linden =20
flowers. Collect fresh, dry them for a mild pleasant tea, which when =20
taken with honey soothes respiratory problems. Unopened leaf buds are =20=

a delicious raw nibble. Those in New Brunswick can find the American =20
Linden in the southwestern counties. In NS and PEI one must search out =20=

the European tree in towns and cities.

Marian has returned to ground zero by coming to speak to the Blomidon =20=

Naturalists' Society. For it was in 1985, disillusioned with a career =20=

in farming, that she decided to return to university. Starting with =20
membership in the BNS in 1983, she entered Acadia University as a =20
Biology student by fall 1987. Able to study part-time only for 5 =20
years, by 1992 she became fulltime, graduating in 1996. Her Acadia =20
tenure owes its longevity to the preparation of the book Roland's =20
Flora of Nova Scotia, by Marian Zinck, a 10-year project. She has been =20=

employed by the Nova Scotia Museum as the Curator of Botany since =20
1999. Marian is a self-proclaimed grazer, not a gardener.
