I have a shot of a male hummingbird at our feeder, taken through the =
kitchen window at 11:30 A.M. today. The window faces north and the =
weather is overcast.

The bird's throat looked purplish black, with other iridescence at the =
edges, at some angles. Male ruby throats seen here had much redder =
throats, but I suppose this difference could be due to the overcast =
weather. Also, on checking the bird books and my picture, I note a hint =
of a white semi-collar extending between the gorget and the green upper =
plumage.

The bird sat at the feeder for quite a long time, and didn't take off =
when I approached it from behind the window. Maybe exhausted or unwell?

Five seconds after I took the shot, another hummer dove in and chased =
it off. We saw males for the first few days (a couple of weeks ago) but =
now are seeing mainly females.

Given the colour of the throat, could I have "shot" a black-chinned? I =
will be glad to e-mail the picture to anyone who wants to take a stab at =
checking the species (within reason). Don't have a website to post it =
to!

We are on Wyman Road, just south of Yarmouth.
