Hi All

Spent the last few days having a great time birding on the South Shore. On Saturday after enjoying Dorothy Poole’s and Clyde Stoddart’s trip, Dad and I headed to Cape Sable Island where almost immediately spotted a bird we thought was a Boat-tailed Grackle. Unfortunately we could only see the bird from a great distance through very heavy heat haze.

We alerted local birders and soon Clyde Stoddart had joined us. His suggestion to change our viewing position of Daniel’s Head from the main drag to Rachel’s turned out to be a good idea. Before we could relocate the grackle however Clyde had to leave, however Rachel informed us that for the last two days she had been seeing a very large grackle feeding in the marsh at Daniel’s Head, thus rising our hopes.

As the tide rose the grackle finally popped out of one of the many low areas in the marsh and we were able to confirm that we had indeed seen a Boat-tailed Grackle. We then revisited Johnny Nickerson who was not surprised to hear of our sighting as he had seen the Boat-tailed Grackle three days earlier at his place.

Other highlights from the weekend including a Gull-billed Tern and a Caspian Tern at The Hawk, a Scarlet Tanager on the Tom Tidney Trail on Dorothy’s/Clyde's trip and watching a Northern Parula building a nest from inside a clump of ‘Old Man’s Beard’ on James Hirtle’s trip. This is my first chance to get to a computer to report to the Boat-tailed Grackle which I understand to still be in the area today. I’ll be returning to the area tomorrow and hope to have another update available either late tomorrow night or early Thursday morning. - All the Best in Birding, -Clarence Stevens
