Thanks for the quick response folks. According to Peter Hope(thanks Peter), "The Mi'kmaq chewed it for sore throat as it would then make your throat numb and ease the pain. It is truly tough medicine". Interesting! I have a close-up lens in my photo kit but for reasons unknown I didn't carry any water on this hike, our first 30C day of the year, so I got lazy and grumpy and didn't take the time for some close-up photos, my apologies. Next time I'll take the time to get a full frame close-up of this flower.
