It has been a good week for birds. I am sorry some didn't appear for last
week's count.
We have the regulars although the junco, chickadee, and woodpecker numbers
have dropped to a couple pairs. Mourning dove are still numerous and fat but
there are fewer. The Jays have come back. Still no red winged blackbird
female.
Come to think of it I haven't seen or heard the Northern Flicker drumming
all week. Maybe he/she got lucky and found a mate. I hope so.!
Sunday an Indigo bunting showed up at the feeder and returned several times
a day until Thursday I believe. We have had for the past several days, a
pair of Rose breasted Grosbeaks as well as 5 extra females that show up from
time to time. There is a White-Crowned Sparrow here with us now. It showed
up the same time as the Indigo bunting and the Rose breasted Grosbeaks.
A couple very fine looking American Goldfinch males as well as a couple
females/juveniles (different groups) have been back and forth oh and there
have been a number of Purple finch females as well as 2 couples visiting.
I have yet to see a warbler here. Lots in Milton the other day.
There are several male hummingbirds and at least one female. Not much
territorial showing off just yet.
There are still several tree swallows trying to settle in the houses and
today I see positive sign of nesting material being taken into the house in
the front yard. The little male who wants to control all the houses took an
awful licking (to my mind) Thursday from the two who wanted one of the
houses. He now is sitting on and calling from the roof of the house over by
the barn. He hasn't been interfering anymore with the front yard
couple........so far. The third house is being ignored once again. I see a
downy woodpecker eyeing it up from time to time but I don't think anyone
moved in it yet.
Still lots of peepers sounding at night here.
