Hello, The second (Annual?) BioBlitz will take place from Friday, 5 June (3:00 PM) to Saturday, 6 June (3:00 pm). The venue will be the newly-designated Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area. (http://www.gov.ns.ca/nse/protectedareas/wa_BlueMountainBirchCove.asp The BioBlitz is a taxonomic survey that identifies as many species as possible within a designated area in a 24-hour period. This event sponsored and organized by St. Mary's University (SMU) is designed to increase community awareness of the scientific importance of biodiversity in our neighbourhood and the valuable services that all flora and fauna provide to improve the quality of our lives. BioBlitz brings elements of scientific research, education and competition together. A wide variety of flora and fauna are to be surveyed and each grouping has a "Twig Leader". There are groups focussing on mammals, birds, higher plants, mosses and lichens, insects and aquatic invertebrates among others. I will be concentrating on the "Bird Twig" and the Twig Leader is Dr. Colleen Barber, Biology Department at SMU. We could use your help. So if you would like to participate as a "Citizen Scientist" as a member of the "Bird Twig" and would like to explore some areas of BMBCL for any part of the 24-hour period noted above, please contact me either by phone or email (off-line) so that you can be assigned an area. Cheers, Bob McDonald Halifax 443-5051 bobathome@eastlink.ca For more information on BioBlitz 2009, visit www.smu.ca/bioblitz
