    Hi, Peter -- if your brown woolly-bear caterpillar had two black =
ends, it was an ISABELLA MOTH CATERPILLAR, Pyrrharctia isabella.  A good =
source for identification of common caterpillars of both butterflies and =
moths is the Peterson First Guide to CATERPILLARS, by Amy Bartlett =
Wright (1993).  This species overwinters as a somewhat active =
caterpillar, and then it pupates in Spring.
