I worried that we might not hear from federal Fisheries and Oceans =20
about what might have killed those seals that ended up on the beaches.

Today's Chronicle Herald has a good article on this, "Dead seals =20
taken off beach". Don Bowen is a very experienced researcher on =20
seals of all kinds, and he says the dead ones are juveniles of grey =20
seals, three to eight weeks old, probably either from Cape Breton or =20
the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, and that probably they died of =20
natural causes. He says that every year about 30 per cent of the =20
70,000 grey seal pups die from various natural causes because of =20
their inexperience and not having parents to show them how to =20
survive. The only thing that is unusual this year is the number of =20
dead seals that have gotten so far south. WARNING: the article goes =20
into some details about the scavenging and decomposition that may not =20=

be palatable to some readers.

Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville
