Beautiful clear evening sky, although, a bit nippy, however, it made =20
great conditions for locating and observing Mercury. Sunset was =20
close to 8:00 p.m.; by 8:15 I had located Mercury in my 10X50 =20
binoculars. By then Mercury was about 11=B0 above the west (slightly =20
north of west, -old sailors would say, west by north). At 8:25 I =20
could pick it out with the unaided eye. By 8:35 I could look away, =20
turn back and sight it again in the late sunset glow with no =20
difficulty, then about 7 or 8 degrees above the horizon. By 9:20 =20
Mercury would have been getting ready to set.

By that time, the Great Winter Oval star group, including Orion's =20
stars, the eye of Taurus the Bull (Aldebaran), Capella, the Gemini =20
Twins and the dog stars were all shining nicely above the west =20
southwest. Even though the evening air felt winterish, the sky is =20
definitely showing signs of spring. When one sees Orion with its host =20=

of accompanying Oval stars leaning down toward the west at twilight , =20=

it's definitely spring. Leo, the Lion riding high in the south, =20
underscores that the season is upon us. What a great sky!
Sherman
