All:

The Loggerhead Shrike might be worth close study or photos, even poorish ones,
This might allow one to speculation on its possible origin. The subspecies
_ludovicianis_ is nominally resident in s.e. USA, whence came our influx of
"southerners" on 4th April. The alternative would be a wanderer of the more
migratory subspecies _mexicanus_, which once nested here, but has been
extirpated here and is largely gone elsewhere in the East.

At least some individuals might be distinguishable in the field; _mexicanus_ is
averages paler above, especially on the uppertail coverts, thus showing less
contrast with the whitish-gray underparts. It also generally has a less
distinct white streak on the scapulars.

Any impressions?

Cheers, Ian McLaren
