This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_yf53vFe5ODmMiVPF2MSgNQ) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT ----- Original Message ----- From: Hans Toom To: Ns-Rba@Yahoogroups.Com Sent: Friday, April 10, 2009 8:38 PM Subject: Shrike Species Laura and I were on our evening walk at Sandy Cove Road, HRM, and heard a bird singing. The song was dead on for a Loggerhead Shrike, a series of buzzes and trills, three to four buzzes or trills at a time. It was a lazy or perhaps better described as a relaxed song. It sang continuously. I doubt a Northern Shrike would sing with such enthusiasm in its winter home, even if there were any around now. It was distant so my record photos are near to useless but with my 18X Image Stabilized Binos I could make out the "Zorro" black mask and hooked bill. Also, it was very evident to both of us that it was smaller than a typical Northern Shrike. Look for it three telephone lengths north from the house at Sandy Cove in the spruce woods to the west.
