I'll start with the nature observation first as the rest of my posts are bi=
rd related. I saw my first painted turtle of the spring today. It was in =
Bayport up on a log in a pond there.

=20

Yesterday=2C David Walmark had an osprey on the nest at Tanner's Settlement=
in First South. He also had horned larks at Hirtle's Beach. Horned larks=
 are also at Second Peninsula.

=20

Today=2C David Walmark located a shorebird on Conrad's Island Beach.  I che=
cked it out this afternoon and it turned out to be a lone black-bellied plo=
ver. It was one of those birds with black spots all over the chest.

=20

I had a report from a reliable source of two purple martins at Broad Cove y=
esterday.

=20

On April 4=2C there was a great blue heron at Stonehurst and one at Garden =
Lots. On April 5 two at Bayport and one at First South.

=20

There seems to be a large movement of hawks into the area. David Walmark r=
eports an American kestrel at Kingsburg. I've seen a few merlins about. Y=
esterday I had a sharp-shinned hawk along the Back Harbour Trail in Lunenbu=
rg and saw two rough-legged hawks on the backside of Lunenburg=2C bordering=
Garden Lots. Red-tailed hawks seem to be everywhere.

=20

There was a chipping sparrow at Bayport today.

=20

American Tree sparrows are still at quite a few locations. There seem to b=
e more bald eagles about than ever before. I'm seeing them everywhere that=
I go locally and at least between one and three every day.

=20

In First South yesterday were roughly 300 greater scaup and 45 red-breasted=
mergansers. Today I counted 202 greater scaup and at least 2 lesser scaup=
. Thirty-eight red-breasted mergansers were there today. =20

=20

American tree sparrows seem to be staying so far=2C at a lot of locations l=
ocally=2C as are common redpolls. An Iceland gull still is flying about Lu=
nenburg Harbour.

=20

I had two yellow-rumped warblers along the Back Harbour Trail in Lunenburg =
yesterday.

=20

This evening I went to a lake trout fishing. It was mostly frozen except f=
or one small spot in the corner. I tried this area for about a half hour a=
nd the time was roughly about two hours before dark. I was delighted to he=
ar a vocal barred owl=2C but it just called once. I then went elsewhere to=
another location where water was open and trout fishing was successful for=
both me and two others present. Anyhow=2C the nice thing about that lake =
was an active beaver. Another follow-up on this is that last year was the =
first time in my life that I struck out on trout. None at all. The curse =
is broken from last year.
