On the way back from a preliminary scouting of my new owl survey route near
Falmouth this morning (rather abortive as the road was washed out and
I damaged my muffler) I went to Grand Pre. In the muddy fields at the east
end were many small mixed flocks of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs.
There were at least as many longspurs as larks, and of those that I got a
decent look, they were mostly in beautiful breeding plumage, which is rarely
seen in NS. Also got nice looks at a Pileated woodpecker along thew Mines
Rd., and heard some Evening Grosbeaks calling. Lots of Black ducks and
Mallards in flooded fields at the moment.
