The boxes are intended to be placed on my property in rural Charlotte County, NB. This property is ten acres in size, consisting of approximately four acres of southern exposure field with scattered apple trees, an old property line wind brake consisting of good sized hardwoods which borders the field, four or five acres of woods consisting of mixed mature hard and softwoods and an acre or two of lakeside marsh. The field, wind brake and the edge of the woods get nice early morning sun and the wood-lot gets good afternoon sun. As of now, I intend to put a Saw-whet box in an old cedar which is surrounded by firs and other cedars, place a Screech Owl box near the edge of the field or marsh and possibly place the Barred Owl box near the edge of the field. Any comments? The relative lack of nesting opportunities for cavity nesters these days has gotten me hooked on placing boxes. Last year I placed several boxes for Tree Swallows and Bluebirds with good results. This year I have created owl boxes, a box for woodpeckers and am providing some opportunities for birds like Barn Swallows and Pheobes. A bat box is next.
