Did some checking around the ponds, etc. yesterday. Not too much of
interest except for two adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls across from
the closed Maple Leaf Poultry plant in Canard. Quite a large flock
here which makes one wonder why they still frequent the area. Because
of the rolling terrain was not able to scan the entire flock.

Most of the ponds were still frozen although Saxon St. Pond is
opening up a bit. One cell of the Port Williams sewage ponds was
completely open but no ducks. Waterfowl generally travel back & forth
between these ponds and the New Minas sewage ponds and since the
latter is no longer accessible, you have to be at Port Williams at
the right time. At Port Williams there was a Red-tailed Hawk giving a
fair imitation of a Goshawk in flight.

Also for the record:

March 5 - an Osprey west of Antigonish along the 104. All ponds/lakes
appeared to be ice-covered but fast flowing rivers were open.

March 7 - Goshawk, likely a female by the size, was observed on the
South Mountain (between Neil's Harbour & South Harbour - northern
CB). I had just mentioned to my wife what a birdless environment it
was so one has to wonder what it was finding to eat (grouse, rabbit?).

March 19 - Northern Shrike between Kentville & Coldbrook on Hwy. 101.

March 20 - Merlin in Coldbrook (intersection of Lovett Road & Brooklyn St).
