--Apple-Mail-120-185941977 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello everyone: To mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo first pointing his telescope at the night sky, the United Nations, through UNESCO, in conjunction with the International Astronomy Union (IAU) is celebrating 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). 140 countries will be participating, with each country having its own unique approach. In Canada this will include a quest for 1,000,000 "Galileo moments" where the public will be introduced to the night sky, a set of collector's cards, sidewalk astronomy, a children's book about the problem of light pollution, commemortive postage stamps, and much more. In Halifax, a rebirth of public planetarium shows is part of the activities planned. A Facebook group has been set up (search on International Year of Astronomy Nova Scotia). There are also plans to have a dark sky preserve set up in Nova Scotia as well as an urban star park in :Halifax. There wall also be event in other parts of the province.
