Dear All, Dec 11, 2008
I went to North Alton 8 days ago (Dec 3) to collect some CLS =
capsules and encountered an unanticipated wrinkle in the ecology of this =
plant.

Of 10 scapes with capsules that I was able to locate (all hand =
pollinated) 9 were prostrate with capsules either in contact with the =
ground or just a few cm above it.=20

The heavy snow event in November (Nov 22) presumably knocked these =
scapes over.

It seems likely that seed of capsules that spent a winter in contact =
with the soil (where it is nearly always wet) would either rot in place =
or be shed very close to the capsule and consequently not contribute =
appreciably to dispersal.
