In the hour before dusk I went out to check if the local ponds were
un-frozen, which indeed they were. There were 19 N.Pintail on Saxon St. Pond
and a few more + 2 Gadwall and some G-W Teal on Canard Pond. Then just
before it got too dark to see anything well Liz called me from where she was
walking the dog to say she had flushed a Short-eared Owl. I went straight
over there, and by driving the muddy track we saw 4 (?5). They 're in the
same area they were last winter- it's about 0.5-1km along a dirt road that
heads east between some farmers fields just N. of Chipman Corner, off Middle
Dyke Rd. If anyone goes there, please stay on the road and don't walk
through the ditches or long grass (it's private property + the owls
shouldn't be harassed).
