A MERLIN IN THE HAND...

Gina and I were out this afternoon (Sunday) for a walk in the Hampton =
park where we go to feed the Chickadees. People have been doing this =
long enough that the birds congregate in trees and come immediately to =
your hand for=20
sunflower seed. There were five or six Chickadees doing this and one =
Blue Jay higher up in a tree presumably waiting for us to leave so it =
could pick up any seed that had been spilled. The Blue Jays never eat =
from your hand. A=20
Chickadee had just left and I was looking to my left when I felt a much =
heavier bird land on my hand from the right. "The Blue Jay," I thought. =
But no - as I turned my head to look, the bird flew, scattering =
sunflower seeds,=20
and I saw the back and tail of a Merlin. I presume it had made an =
attempt at the Chickadee; arrived a split second too late, landed =
anyway, realized its mistake, and moved on. It's interesting that it has =
learned that people pausing in the park and holding out their hands =
filled with seed sometimes add up to good hunting.
