Actually, they've got these things called "iPods" now      ;)

        ...much, much better than CDs. You might even be able to plug it
into your cassette player, but if not, a pair of portable speakers does not
cost much. I strap my iPod onto the back of my portable speakers just with a
rubber band.

For the Nocturnal Owl Surveys (
http://www.bsc-eoc.org/national/nationalowls.html), I typically just use my
vehicle's CD player...that way I don't have to bring anything extra with me.
The problem with that is that I have to leave the doors/windows open for the
sound to get out, and if the night is cold, one doesn't even get the few
minutes warmth between stops.
