Lots of bird activity at Mount Saint Vincent
University today. I spent about 20 minutes between
classes checking out birds in a spot of brush
surrounded by trees. Chickadees, goldfinches, song
sparrows and juncos made up the bulk of the flock, but
there were a few white-winged crossbills in the spruce
trees, and a pair of downy woodpeckers. I was watching
the downies and thinking about all the red-bellied
woodpeckers we've had in the province this fall, and
how I hadn't seen one yet. And of course, at that
moment, an adult male red-bellied woodpecker flew in
and landed on a birch tree about 20 feet away. Love it
when that kind of thing happens! He hung around for
about five minutes, then flew off into the subdivision
north of campus.
