Mon Nov 24 /08 Every now and then a birder hopes for a day like this one... Bernard Forsythe reports that his release today of the stranded RED-THROATED LOON found on Peck Meadow Rd, Greenfield yesterday (as reported to NatureNS by Jim Wolford), went very successfully this morning at the eastern tip of Long Island (The Guzzle), Grand Pre, at high tide. The Loon swam a little way out, paused, gave a three soft 'mewing'calls (maybe a 'thank you' to BLF?), drank a little water, dove, came up and rose in the water, flapping its wings, and joined three other RTLOs that were in the Guzzle area. It was a very rewarding day for both concerned. After this enjoyable experience Bernard decided to walk along the dyke wall westward and found a SNOWY OWL in the marshy area, possibly forced up there due to high tide? After flushing, it ranged out over the Grand Pre fields before circling back and heading towards either Starr's Point or possibly Wellington Dyke. Other birds he saw along the beach: 6 DUNLIN, 1 BLACK-B. PLOVER, and around Grand Pre many SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS plus a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR. There was also a N. HARRIER seen. This afternoon, Bernard and Rick Whitman headed down to Oak Ave, east end of Wolfville, and the trails along the rail tracks to look for the YELLOW-BR.CHAT. Not only did they find it but they were in for a delightful surprise. There were lots of ROBINS, one HERMIT THRUSH, a CARDINAL was heard by Rick, but some unusual alarm notes coming from a group of chickadees caught their interest so they investigated to find...a NORTHERN SAW-WET OWL asleep in the bows of a fallen tree. Continuing their journey they also found the GT HORNED OWL that frequents this area. So now Bernard is hoping to see one of the BARRED OWLS in his own backyard tonight to make it a truly memorable 4-OWL DAY! Cheers, Judy Tufts >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Judy Tufts Wolfville <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
