Hi all
I did a quick afternoon loop through New Glasgow and checking the sewer, Chance, Little and Merigomish Harbours ( Melmerby PP section) this afternoon. Highlights were mostly ducks and gulls. At the sewer there were still 100+ RING-BILLED GULLS, but ICELAND GULLS have increased to 15. This will soon reverse as winter approaches.
At Chance Harbour there were 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS with 2 SANDERLINGS and a DUNLIN. There were 9 RED-THROATED LOONS in the Strait just off the wharf and 2 Gannets flying by.
At Black Pt. were 10 HOODED MERGANSERS. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK circled with several Eagles.
Powell Pt. PP had about 1200 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and 200 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was easy to pick out there as it had a noticeably pink belly. Hundreds of gulls in the distance were too hard to see from the park entrance.
At the boardwalk to the entrance of Melmerby PP. a MYRTLE WARBLER, was seen with Tree and Song Sparrows and Snow Bunting. Off-shore were 2 more RED-THROATED LOONS, 3 HORNED GREBES, A handful of SURFand WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. A DUNLIN nad 8 SANDERLINGS flew over the beach. Inner bay had 200+ Canada Geese, 150 Black Ducks. Most of the Harbours had 20-30 Common Goldeneye.
cheers
Ken
