Hi Cindy
I am writitng my report for the NS bird Society newsletter and want to include your Canada Warbler. Shall I call it Springhill area or can you give me a closer community? I think I would call those sightings X unless you saw some degree of dependence on adults. They could have migrated in from other squares. Always love your photography.
cheers

Subject: [NatureNS] Nature-Watching in Springhill and a new lifer!!!

  Hi All:

I spent yesterday morning and this morning over in my atlas square nature-watching, birding, looking for animal tracks/scat, and looking for photo subjects. After all the rain it was great for spotting tracks. I had fresh bear, mainland moose, coyote, skunk and deer tracks.

The birds I saw yesterday and today were as follows:

  AMERICAN KESTREL

  BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES

  BOREAL CHICKADEES

  BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER

  PALM WARBLERS (MANY)

  CEDAR WAXWINGS (MANY)

  GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS

  NORTHERN FLICKERS (MANY)

  SONG SPARROWS

  DARK-EYED JUNCOS

  GRACKLES

  FLYCATCHER (SP)

  COMMON MERGANSERS

  BLUE JAY

  CANADA WARBLER

  AMERICAN ROBIN

  RED-TAILED HAWK

The highlight of my day today was a lifer bird - a CANADA WARBLER. I got some pics but only with a 135mm lens (I don't have a big lens yet for my new camera) so they are heavily cropped and not the greatest quality. How common are they? It sure was a beautiful bird.

Here is the link to my recent photos:

  http://www.pbase.com/cindycreighton/recent_photos

I've also started taking photos of animal tracks. If anyone wants to have a look and correct any mis-identifications I may have made I'd appreciate it!

  AN ATLAS QUESTION:

Can I add the Canada Warbler as "X" "(observed) or is this considered a migrant and not in breeding season? Also, the group of Cedar Waxwings were mostly immatures - can I confirm them as "FY" (fledged young), or is it too late? Same with the Flickers - many immatures that I saw today.

I also had a close encounter with a bear. I stopped on a bridge over a brook, and got out to look and do a little pishing. Well I pished out a bear! He came out onto the road, we looked at each other, then he stood up on his haunches and sniffed the air, I snapped his picture, then off he ran. He was small - a yearling perhaps.

  Cheers!

  Cindy
