Hi All;

Winter approaches, and along with the typical messy weather it is
time for the winter birding season. As ever I'll be keeping
tracking of the cumulative provincial bird list for the winter season
(December - February), but this time around Don MacNeill and I are
proposing a new activity:

The Nova Scotia Winter Birding Century Run

It's easy to play. Just form a team of two or more participants,
and starting December 1st go birding together anywhere you desire
within the province of Nova Scotia. Each team member will pledge
$10 that will go into a pot, and the first team that reaches 100
species on their team winter list will win the pot, and donate it to
a registered charity of their choice.

All members of each team must see or hear each species as a team at
the same time -- no solo birding.

Rare species, ie, those not seen every winter, should be
documented. If a particular rare bird is seen by lots of people,
that likely will suffice. The list of species, common and rare, seen
in winter in Nova Scotia is on the Winter Birding web site:

http://tinyurl.com/nswinter

If enough teams form we can distribute the pledged money to award
first, second, and third places, but if there are only a few teams
we'll have just a grand prize.

If you don't wish to be on a team, but still wish to keep track of
your personal sightings, we encourage you to keep us apprised of your
achievements. We keep track of all personal totals on the NS Winter
Birding List page:

http://tinyurl.com/nswinterlist

County lists, province lists, all are welcome. The only requirement
is to have fun.

So if you wish to form a team and play along, let me know. If you'd
like to form a team, but think that paying $10 each towards a charity
is not appropriate, form a team anyway. We'll keep track of how you
do, but you won't be eligible for the prize.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All the best, and good winter birding,
