At the moment there are about 3 dozen robins in my back and front yard. They
seem to be soaking up sun with an occasional dive down to an barberry that
is loaded with seed, and I am writing this I see many are diving down to a
mobile home behind my house and barn. I believe the people there decorated
with what we call N.S. holly. They usually do this time of the year.
Some birds look quite fit but some look extremely scraggy. Lots of preening
going on so maybe just ruffled feathers.
Must go see where the raccoon hid my chickadee feeder that I forgot to bring
in last evening. HOW do they know! if you miss just one night?
Oh the Northern Flicker was here a good part of yesterday, the keening I
thought might be a osprey is a Blue Jay. Other than that we have a couple
juncos, no sparrows, (highly unusual) we are swamped with Mourning Doves
part of the day, and there are a couple groups of chickadees, one which
comes at dusk, numbers 12 or more. Two Common Grackles, a couple Starlings
and of course the Blue Jays, five of them, usually.
Any suggestions what would be flitting (as compared to flying) about at
4:30. Very small, quite chunky for its size, even flitting it is fast
moving. Dark, brown I think.........my mind says another bat but where would
it be staying? What will it eat? We still get moths moving through around
the outside light.
Hard frost here last night. Shadows are still white and sparkly.
