An interesting day. I was working around outside the door today and the feeder traffic in the grapevine wasn't extensive but steady. I have our usual song sparrows, a junco or two, several groups of chickadees as well as a rowdy group of Blue Jays. I thought I could hear a sea gull close by but soon realised it was a Jay mimicking one. There was a flock of robins, no more than a dozen, passing over head several times going east west then west east and what I think was a mixed group of crossbills attacking the cones in the spruce and firs. There aren't many comes left if they need winter fodder. My trees were loaded! I had a Northern Flicker visit the feeder as well as a couple downy and a hairy woodpecker. The Black-Throated Blue Warbler has been here for the most of the third day now. About 4:30 I had to run in as far as Whynot's garage and on the way back out (just a turn around trip) as I came to the straight stretch before Five Rivers I had to brake hard as a small bat flew straight at my windshield! Smallest one I have ever seen. It managed to turn away and off into the woods. It wasn't swooping but fluttering. Surprised me. Marg Millard, White Point, Queens http://margmillard.ca
