Canso Causeway birds, Saturday 01 November 2008 The NSBS outing to the Canso Causeway found fewer Northern Gannets than some years, about 200. The first of November is near the beginning of the concentrations of billfish (aka needlefish, Atlantic Saury, skipjack) that accumulate along the Canso Causeway. A first year Iceland Gull was the first of the fall for most participants. A lone Leach's Storm-petrel flying over the strait was a real surprise. For much of the morning there were 15-20 Bald Eagles in the air. As well there were at least 50 roosting in the trees on the hills on the Guysborough County side. In a small valley off the road to Mulgrave another 15-20 were roosting. A person we met said she counted more than 50 earlier in the morning in this valley. One hundred is a conservative estimate of the number of Bald Eagles around the morning of 01 November. Anyone with the opportunity to visit the Canso Causeway within the next week or more should be treated to a spectacular show of Gannets diving and Eagles cruising along with a variety of hundreds of Gulls.
