Marsh Wren, Clay-colored Sparrow, etc. -Ketch Harbour Road In the rain today, Dad and I birded the Ketch Harbour Road from Chebucto Head to Crystal Crescent Beach. For most of the morning we saw next to nothing in the nonstop heavy showers but then the sun came out and birds were suddenly everywhere. In less than an hour we wracked up an impressive list of birds. Huge numbers of American Robins were falling from the sky and dripping from the branches everywhere we went and good numbers of Yellow-shafted Flickers lorded over the flocks of sparrows that bounced along the roadside shoulders. Highlights and locations are as follows: Sambro -Midway along East Bull Point Road in the cattail marsh, 1 Marsh Wren, which also kindly sang for us 3 times. Sandy Cove Road - 2 Indigo Buntings, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 4 Gray Jays, & 1 eastern Palm Warbler Ketch Harbour Road East - 2 Blackpoll Warblers, 1 Indigo Bunting, 1 Chipping Sparrow, 1 eastern palm Warbler, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 1 White-crowned Sparrow. Chebucto Head Road & Chebucto Head waters - 3 Wilson’s Storm Petrels, 1 Atlantic Puffin, 1 Great Cormorant (lots of Double -crested Cormorants & Northern Gannets), 2 Blackpoll Warblers, 1 Clay-colored Sparrow, 1 Baltimore Oriole traveling with a flock of sparrows, and 4 large flocks of sparrows that flitted into the woods before they could be checked out. Portuguese Cove Road - 2 White-crowned Sparrows, 1 Indigo Bunting During a very long lunch break Dad added up the list of species we had seen and we were both surprised to find out we had about 60 species. After 2 p.m. we did a little birding on the Dartmouth side and ended the day with an almost effortless 78 species. - All the Best in Birding, Clarence Sandy Cove Road - 2 Indigo Buntings, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 4 Gray Jays, & 1 eastern Palm Warbler Ketch Harbour Road East - 2 Blackpoll Warblers, 1 Indigo Bunting, 1 Chipping Sparrow, 1 eastern palm Warbler, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 1 White-crowned Sparrow.
