Hi,

Many years ago, in the days before whale-watching became a tourist activity,
the NSBS used to get local fishermen to take them out for a day, usually
Labor Day. I was on "Squid's" boat, and Charlie McDormand's was alongside. A
warbler kept approaching Charlie's boat from the bow, and tried to land.
About a dozen birders on board were all gazing through binoculars at it and
obviously trying to ID it - all the while completely ignoring the Humpback
that was spy-hopping and tail-flipping behind the boat! I wish I had been
able to get a picture of everyone ignoring the whale - it looked like those
ads on TV where someone misses the dancing bear because his attention is
briefly diverted. Somewhere, though, I have a photo of a Purple Finch that
not only landed on the boat, but spent some time on a female birder's hat
(which was on her head at the time).
