I was kayaking on Gaspereau Lake (Kings Co.: 45 N 64.5 W) on Sun Sept 21. Along the north shore I saw 3 otters (Lontra canadensis) on a rock, sharing a fish. I've never seen otters this close and I didn't realize how big they are. There was a minor argument about sharing the fish and one otter jumped into the water. I tried to drift quietly closer and take some pictures. The 2 otters were watching me but weren't too alarmed. But then I pushed the wrong button on my camera : "flash on" instead of "zoom in", and when the flash went off, the otters jumped in the lake. All three of them dove and resurfaced several times. I did manage to get a few mediocre photos of them "treading water"- they can lift their necks quite high out of the water. From the photo I seems that one otter is bigger than the other 2: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8904576@N06/2884981378/ In the same area, in the winter, I've see the tracks of otters sledding on the ice. It would be a real treat to catch the otters in the act of sledding! Photo at : http://www.flickr.com/photos/8904576@N06/2876936139/ -- David Dermott , Wolfville Ridge, Nova Scotia, Canada
