Canada's first record of Broad-billed Sandpiper occurred at Hartlen Point, Nova Scotia, 9 September 1990. The observers were Ian McLaren and myself, and the detailed written report we provided was published subsequently in "North American Birds" magazine, as well as "Nova Scotia Birds". Johnny Nickerson's sighting of a Broad-billed Sandpiper from four years ago was never documented by a written report or photograph, and so has not entered the ornithological record. The same applies to his report of a Little Stint from earlier this summer. Regarding the current Broad-billed Sandpiper report, despite a number of observers having seen the bird, no photographic or written documentation has yet been produced, but we hope that someone will do so, so that the sighting can enter the database. Birds of this rarity incite great interest beyond our borders, causing birders to travel to Nova Scotia to try and view the bird. Therefore all responsible birders should ensure that sightings of this magnitude are documented.
