All,

I had a brief look at a shorebird yesterday evening at Grand Desert that might have been the Curlew Sandpiper previously reported. It was in the 8-9 inch range in size, slim with a smallish head (it was on the alert) and proportionately longer legs than a peep, with a warmer colour (in the rufous range) on the neck than a Buff-breasted has. It was too distant for me to see the bill or other features, and took flight. Its call, given several times in flight, was not familiar to me.

I saw it at about 5:45 p.m., flushed from the edge of grass on the ocean side of the sandy point at the beach which is straight ahead as you come over the bridge. Roosting at high tide seems to remain the best chance to see the shorebirds at Grand Desert.

Tide this evening will not be high until 8:15, when it will be dark. I am going to try again at high tide this morning.

Cheers,
Susann Myers
