AUG. 21, 2008 -- Today on the Acadia Univ. campus today, I found lots
of apparent globular SCALE INSECTS on twigs of a honey-locust tree.
Best match in one of my tree-insect books is the BLACK SCALE,
Saissetia oleae (Olivier)(Coccidae?), which occurs on a wide variety
of trees, including honey-locust.

Also I saw an impressive long, black, female PELECINUS WASP -- this
is the primarily parthenogenetic (cloning?) wasp that uses her long
abdomen to reach into the soil to get her ovipositor down to larvae
of June beetles, which then are "parasitized" (actually predated --
outcome is death of beetle), after detecting such beetles apparently
with special sensors in their enlarged hind tibiae?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
