My email about the long tailed duck never surfaced so I will just add =
something to what Brian already wrote.  You could look up 'hound' in the =
Dictionary of Newfoundland on page 260.  It explains a few interesting =
sources as to why the duck was called a hound.  If you use three words =
in google search -- hound, Newfoundland, and bird, you will come up with =
some good l i n k s on the first page.  The best one has 'book' in the =
name of the website.  Hope my response will come through this time. We =
all learn something new every day. =20
