I got a great look at my lifer Black-billed Cuckoo
yesterday. At work, I've been hearing a song off and
on for about a month that I thought might be a cuckoo.
Yesterday the bird was singing again, too far away
through the thick brush to be easily found. I thought
I was beaten, until I remembered the laptop with BBS
software installed. I hauled the computer outside,
turned up the volume and played the black-billed
cuckoo song - lo and behold, one came right to the
edge of the woods in plain view! I turned off the
song, and the cuckoo stayed for about half an hour,
sitting on a branch, singing every now and again.

If anyone wants to try for the cuckoo, it's in Hilden
near the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Helene van Doninck, who runs the centre, welcomes
quiet birders, and can be reached at 893-0253.
