All: Rita Viau has allowed me to put her instructive image of a W. Willet on the NS-RBA rare bird photo site. It was photographed yesterday, 27 July, at E. Passage, and I believe is the same one I found there 20 July. You can see how distinctive that bird compared with the E. Willet in front of it. It is paler, and notably longer billed and longer legged. It appears less evenly gray above than the one I saw, admittedly in foggy conditions. It is a worn adult (possibly a year old). Also yesterday, I saw another such bird at Rainbow Haven, HRM. Obviously we should be re-thinking the timing of occurrences here of this distinctive subspecies (species?), which has been thought only to arrive here after mid August and predominate among Willets only in later fall. Cheers, Ian McLaren
