David Walmark and I went out birding this morning before I went to work bet=
ween 06:30 and 08:00. I did a shorebird survey and then we went to Heckman=
's Island. On the island there is a property owned by Acadia University wi=
th a lot of diverse habitat around it. Anyhow=2C we were seranaded first b=
y a gray catbird and then there were two young red foxes. We found the act=
ive osprey nest on the property which I believe I have not confirmed yet wi=
thin that square. The gray catbird I believe is also new for this square. =
A surprise was a Lincoln's sparrow which also is new for the square. =20

David and I were walking back towards the car when from amongst a think gro=
wth of shrubs and trees and beside a marshy area came a call I was not fami=
liar with. It was a cross between a pied-billed grebe and a rail. This is=
the only thing I can liken it to. Soon after hearing the call a cuckoo fl=
ew over our heads and across a cove to the vegetation on the other side. W=
ell if you haven't guessed it by now=2C it was a black-billed cuckoo. My f=
irst one after having seen thousands of yellow-billed cuckoos over the year=
s. I played my cd and it was an exact match to the call.
