Hi there, What an enchanting description of your evening at Pond Cove! I wish I had been there. I rarely see fireflies now: I remember when I was a child in Winnipeg, we used to see so many in the summer at the cabin in the Whiteshell, and at Lake of the Woods. In recent years, my most memorable encounter with fireflies was during a Nature Nova Scotia conference - June of 1998, I think it was. We were on a night-time Owl Prowl led by Randy Lauff in Beaver Mountain Provincial Park. We didn't find any owls, but we ran into a wonderful display of dozens and dozens of fireflies dancing over a wet meadow. It more than made up for not hearing owls! I mentioned this thread to my brother, who was able to report that he has seen a single Firefly at my parents' home in Bedford about ten days ago, and again on Saturday night. That seems to be a typical sighting for us these days. Does anyone know if Fireflies have really declined, or are we all just being nostalgic? Cheers, Patricia L.
