In response to Richard:

I had the chance to observe a lot of hummingbird interaction (better 
aggression) recently.  Fast paced movement was only part of it, considering 
their size the bunch was noisy, both vocal and wing buzzing, during their 
aerial dog fights and feeder visits.
Given the territorial behaviour and attitude it wouldn't surprise me to see 
them respond to pishing, espcl. in areas with lots of potential competitors 
that have to be kept under control.

@Jeff  What was the gender of the ones responding to pishing?
