Hi Jeannie,

This is a longhorn beetle (despite having relatively short "horns",
i.e., antennae) in the family Cerambycidae, called Asemum striatum
(L.). It is a very common and widely distributed longhorn beetle in
the region (it is found throughout Nova Scotia) associated with
various species of decaying conifers, especially pine. This specimen
looks to have a moderate number of epiphytic uropodid mites attached
to it.

There is some information on their biology at:

http://www.forestpests.org/poland/pinelongasemum.html

And some photographs located at:

http://www.zin.ru/animalia/Coleoptera/eng/asestrob.htm

Did you find it in Port Hawkesbury or Cape George?

Cheers!

Chris
