The=A0June meeting of the Halifax Centre of the RASC (Royal Astronomical =
=20
Society of Canada) will be held Friday,=A0June 20th at 8:00 PM in Room =20=

L176 of the Loyola Building at Saint Mary's University.

(A map can be found at the Centre's web site; see below.)

Members of the public are welcome. Attendance is free.

The June meeting features the following main talk:
Water & Sky in the Deep South by Dr. Roy Bishop

"God put astronomers in the north, but put all the best sky stuff in =20
the south" (Terence Dickinson and Alan Dyer). The best open cluster, =20
the best globular clusters, the best emission nebula, the best dark =20
nebula, the best view of the Milky Way Galaxy, the two brightest =20
external galaxies, and the three brightest appearing stars all lie in =20=

the southern sky. Within the past 4 months I had the good fortune to =20
view these during visits to the southern tips of three continents and =20=

several islands in the South Atlantic and South Pacific. Not only are =20=

most of these celestial highlights invisible from Canada, but our =20
familiar sky can look very strange when you are inverted. I will share =20=

some impressions of the stars, the land, the sea, and the wildlife.=94

Dr. Roy Bishop is a past-president of the Halifax Centre and of the =20
national Society. He is the current Honorary President of the Halifax =20=

Centre. For many years he was the Head of the Physics Department of =20
Acadia University. Dr. Bishop was the editor of the RASC Observer=92s =20=

Handbook for 20 years (1981-2001).
