JUNE 6, 2008 - Today at Grand Pre I checked out the population of
GARLIC MUSTARD along Highway 1, and found it to be extremely
noticeable right now. For anyone who hasn't yet seen this species,
check out the corner of Old Post Road and Highway 1, west of the
Domaine de Grand Pre winery. You're looking for an herbaceous
plant, about half a metre in height, with small 4-paarted white
flowers above the leafy stem. This is an extremely aggressive
introduced weed that has been in that area for perhaps 10 years now.
Last year and again this year there have been local workshops to
generate public awareness, but both were done at the wrong time of
year when the plant could not be seen. Now would be the perfect time
for such. I first encountered this plant at Point Pelee Nat. Park in
southernmost Ontario perhaps 20-25 years ago, and there it formed a
monoculture understory along the forest edges and probably well into
the forest.

Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville
