2 hr - Boat tour - highlight of Birding week-end

 West Pubnico

The Musée acadien in West Pubnico will host its 4th annual Tern Festival, the weekend of June 27-29. 2008. Weather permitting, a 2 hr boat tour will place on Saturday morning June 28. The 2hr Boat Sail in Lobster Bay :( limited to 25 guests) will visit Brothers Island, colony of Roseate Terns, Ram & Argyle Islands, Wind Farm and Aquaculture site. Last year’s turn out was very successful. Birders came from Halifax, Mahone Bay, Bridgewater, Granville Ferry, Milton , Lunenburg, Gleenwood, Claks Harbour , Pubnico and tourists in the area from Germany.

A conference of Nova Scotia’s Coastal Plain Flora will be featured for the first time. Local interested people can participate to, Coastal Plain Project Coordinator, Patti Green’s conference: Plants on the edge, Habitat threats and You can help save endangered species. Donation accepted.

The birding enthusiast is increasing and a chance to see a Roseate Tern is very attractive. “Around a thousand terns are spotted during that time of the season ( May, June, July) including the Common and the Arctic Tern and the endangered Roseate Tern sighting in West Pubnico is what birders came to see.” organizer explained.
The sighting of the Roseate Tern was at Pond Road, West Pubnico, adjust of the Brothers Island, two tiny islands about 1 km west of Lower West Pubnico, Nova Scotia, Canada. These islands represent the largest and the most stable population in Canada of the endangered species, the Roseate Tern and IBA designated them an Important Bird Area in 1999.
Conferences, guest speakers, the carving decoy demonstration, the boat tour, viewed the carving decoys on display and a singsong in the tepee makes for a most enjoyable weekend including Acadian hospitality.
