Dear All, June 8, 2008
For several years we have seen a Red Squirrel in the yard and
several times have seen two at the same time. Looks like there now are four.

Yesterday I saw three Red Squirrels scampering around the woodpile
like some scene out of Bambi; one adult and two young.

Today I went back to attempt pollination of more CLS and about 80%
of plants had ready pollen and 20% past. We will see what happens but
all plants are weak this year except for a few that are on mossy
hummocks. The chenille had slipped back from the end of the plastic ink
tube but the pollen cap rolls off nicely onto the plastic and adheres to
it well so that was my brush today.

I think there must have been root injury due to frost heave. The
Trout Lily (Dog-Tooth Violet) nearby did not bloom at all this year and
many of their deep rhizomes were heaved up to form loops indicating
heave of ~10 cm.

In the area that I had mapped plants for four years, I doubt that
more than 1/3 of the plants have leaves this year, there are very few
flowers and there is substantial feeding by deer. Deer have also been
feeding on Clintonia flowers; clipped just below where the flowers would
have been.
