Many readers who are not presently members of NatureNS (FNSN) may be interested in joining some of our activities next weekend. Here is the program: NATURE NOVA SCOTIA outing and annual general meeting: 30^th , 31^st May, and June 1^st , 2008. Visitors Information Centre, 2517 Highway 3, R.R #1 Barrington , Nova Scotia B0W 1E0 902-637-2625 Friday, May 30^th , 7-9 pm: Meet and Greet: light refreshments, wine and cheese, tea and coffee. Sign–up for field trips and view various displays. 8 p.m.: Special speaker - Sherman Boates , Manager, Wildlife Resources , NS Department of Natural Resources. 9 pm: Owl Prowl on the Wireless Hill Road. 10 pm: Astronomy with Larry Bogan at Wireless Hill. Saturday, May 31^st , 8 am: Visitors’Centre meeting place for announcements and displays. Day trip #1 : Pubnico area (morning) : Look for Roseate Terns with Ted D’Eon. Bring your lunch, or try the delicious “Acadian Sampler” at the Red Cap in West Pubnico. (afternoon) A : Free choice : visit to the Pubnico Point Windfarm, the Acadian Village, the Acadian Museum, the Robert’s Island Ducks Unlimited site, and return via the Lighthouse route. (afternoon) B : Return at noon time to join the CSI trip or the Bacarro trip. Meeting arrangements will be announced. Day trip #2 : Explore Cape Sable Island (morning): The Hawk and other popular locations. Brant feed on the flats in the late winter and early spring; Piping Plover traditionally nest on sandy beaches in the area; shorebirds stage here in great numbers during migration. Visit the IBA site and learn about the Nature Canada special status of CSI-IBA. This is the only known site in Canada where American Oystercatchers nest. (afternoon) A special “Botany in a Bog” trip on CSI is planned with Ruth and Reg Newell. Look for sea birds off Hawk Beach, see the sunken forest, and visit the Natural Resources property on the most South Western tip of Nova Scotia. Day trip #3: Port La Tour peninsula and Baccaro Point. Botany, birds, and butterflies with Donna Ensor and Joan Czapalay. Visit site of an early French fortress, Fort St. Louis. If time permits a trip to Blanche may be arranged. Day trip #4 (am) Visit the site of the endangered Thread- leafed Sundew with Sherman Boates and Lillian Perry. Swaines’ Bog and four other bogs in the area are the only locations in Canada of these special carnivorous plants. Sunday, 1^st June, 2008 _The Nature __Nova Scotia__ __AGM_: 9 am at Papa’s Steak House. This restaurant is just before the CSI Causeway on the right (west) side of the road. Breakfast will be free for Nature Nova Scotia members. Guests will be accommodated at a special price of approximately $7.00. Prior to the agm an early morning nature walk will be offered at 7:30 am on the Sherose Island Nature Trail behind the arena parking lot and/or on the Barrington Passage Trail which runs by the restaurant. Directions for both hikes will be posted at the Visitor’s Centre. We urge that you carpool. Afternoon field trips: Bring a lunch or pick one up following the agm. Depart from the Visitors’ Centre or Steak House. Trip 1) Birding CSI with our South West Nova Birders. Trip 2) Atlas for woodland breeding birds: Clyde River area with Joan Czapalay. Explore a variety of habitats. (Bring waterproof foot wear and insect repellent.) Trip 3) Nature and local history trip: Villagedale, Sand Hills, Sebim Beach, and early Acadian settlement and fortifications with Lillian Perry.
