Subject: [NatureNS] 20080522 - Cormorants in "v", Antigonish

 Hi all,

This morning while driving to work I saw 14 Cormorant sp. flying in a "v", and heading roughly west or a little south of west. I couldn't determine the species, but I wondered if they were Great Cormorants, perhaps searching for the now defunct colony at Crystal Cliffs. I don't normally associate the "v" formation with cormorants unless they are migrating.

From my years in Louisbourg, I'm used to watching
both Great and Double-crested Cormorants, which nest on Green Island in the
mouth of the harbour there. Double-crested Cormorants regularly fly out
from their breeding islands in V-formation in the morning, heading out to fish
together at a particular lake or bit of coastline. The ones you saw
are unlikely to have been Great Cormorants still on migration, as Greats migrate
earlier than Double-cresteds, typically in March/early April.
