On Tuesday (May 15) I checked out Palmeter Woods (West Kentville). Many migrants were still in low numbers .... Parula, Waterthrush, L. Flycatcher. B/H Vireo. There were nine Ovenbirds (about half the singing males one would encounter in early June); seven Black-throated Green Warblers but all on the long loop; 2 Red Crossbills; 1 Nashville W.: B&W Warblers, Palm W., etc. Of particular interest was 6 Hermit Thrushes, two feeding in sandy soil on a path & four along the edge of the RR bed. These were quite unwary, so much so that I thought at first they were Veeries. I was able to get a few pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/2496181602/ One B/T/G Warbler was very cooperative, so much so that he was always above me & usually too close for pictures. A pair of B&W Warblers in the same area were much more interested in each other than posing for pics. A Palm Warbler did allow one shot though: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/2495357779/ There have been quite a number of Cabbage Whites in the past 4-5 days but today I saw my first Spring Azure. My first dragonfly of the year was also in our backyard today, a new one for me....an Uhler's Sundragon. Three images can be viewed here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/2495357821/in/photostream/ This is the second spring I have noted a very large Bumble Bee. It appears to be twice the size of the usual ones. Does anyone know the name of the species?? Here is one pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/2496181688/ Angus .
