This may be the ultimate reason why, in the experience of the sailors
described by Paul, the birds that made it to the ship still died. They
were probably extremely dehydrated and had no source of water. The bird
described by Paul may have been in such a condition and the insects it
found to eat on-board the boat actually accelerated its death.
