Hi Chris, not sure what the entire truth on that is but I've seen birds like
mourning doves grabbed by one or two feathers and the entire set of tail
feathers is then on the ground. I suspect its mostly that they are pulled
out by predators...but situations like this make me wonder.

that the tail feathers aren't pulled out by the predator but the bird being
preyed upon can actually intentionally release the tail feathers?
